Rep. Elise Stefanik, U.S. Congresswoman representing New York’s 21st district since 2015, has publicly announced the launch of an investigation into Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York Department of Health regarding alleged withholding of healthcare funding for rural hospitals in her district.
On December 4, 2025, Stefanik posted on X: “Kathy Hochul is weaponizing New York’s Department of Health to block funding and close a rural hospital in my district. The Worst Governor in America is putting our state’s rural hospital infrastructure on the brink of crisis. Today I am launching an investigation into”.
In a subsequent post on December 4, 2025, Stefanik stated: “The Worst Governor in America’s Kathy Hochul heartless delay tactics on healthcare funding have left New York’s rural hospitals on the verge of closing their doors. I’m launching an investigation into the unacceptable mismanagement of New York’s Department of Health under Kathy”.
Elise Stefanik was born in Albany, New York in 1984 and currently resides in Schuylerville. She holds a degree from Harvard University. Since entering Congress in 2015 after succeeding Bill Owens, she has represented constituents across northern New York and has frequently addressed issues affecting rural communities.
Rural hospitals across the United States have faced significant financial pressures over recent years due to declining populations and changes in healthcare reimbursement models. In this context, concerns about state-level decisions impacting hospital funding are not unique to New York but reflect broader national challenges facing rural healthcare infrastructure.
