House Republican Leadership Chairwoman Elise Stefanik has addressed state Medicaid contractors involved in Asset Verification Systems (AVS) to ensure that Medicaid assistance is directed toward those genuinely in need. This action follows media reports highlighting failures in verifying enrollee eligibility within state Medicaid programs.
In her letter, Stefanik expressed concern over these reports and requested a thorough review to ensure compliance with mandated Medicaid eligibility redeterminations as per the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023. She emphasized her commitment to fiscal responsibility and the integrity of federal entitlement programs, stating, “I am dedicated to ensuring that taxpayer-funded resources effectively support our nation’s most vulnerable populations.”
Stefanik highlighted the role of AVS companies as essential partners in assisting state and territorial agencies with Medicaid eligibility verification and detecting potential fraudulent applications. She noted, “Your cooperation and insights are invaluable” as she conducts a review for compliance with the required eligibility redeterminations.
The letter also addressed scenarios where individuals exploit resources intended for vulnerable populations by adhering strictly to regulations while ignoring their intent. Stefanik stressed the importance of ensuring assistance reaches those truly in need.
Furthermore, Stefanik sought input on actions by CMS or its contractors that may have disregarded Congressional directives, particularly concerning guidance issued on October 17, 2022. This guidance instructed states not to recover costs from beneficiaries found guilty of Medicaid fraud, which Stefanik argued undermines program integrity.
Stefanik concluded her letter by thanking recipients for their attention and cooperation, expressing anticipation for a comprehensive response and continued collaboration to uphold federal entitlement program integrity.
