Today, House Republican Leadership Chairwoman Elise Stefanik and Congressman Darrell Issa reintroduced the Modern Firearm Safety Act. The legislation aims to prevent states like New York and California from implementing “handgun rosters” that restrict access to modern handgun models by requiring manufacturers to adopt costly features.
Chairwoman Stefanik stated, “I am proud to re-introduce the Modern Firearm Safety Act to end the unconstitutional gun-grabbing agenda thrust on law-abiding New York residents by Far Left Democrats like Kathy Hochul.” She emphasized her commitment to protecting Second Amendment rights.
Congressman Issa expressed similar sentiments, noting, “For decades, the clear Constitutional rights of law-abiding gun owners have been targeted for elimination, and handgun rosters are only one of the cynical schemes used to undermine the Second Amendment through the pretense of firearm safety.”
The act specifically seeks to prohibit states from mandating loaded chamber indicators, magazine disconnect mechanisms, and microstamping for handgun sales. This aligns with a federal district court ruling that found California’s requirements unconstitutional.
States such as New York, California, Maryland, Massachusetts, and the District of Columbia currently enforce restrictive handgun rosters. These measures make it challenging for manufacturers to introduce new models due to required features deemed unnecessary by critics.
The bill intends to restore Second Amendment rights in states perceived as hostile toward gun ownership.
