Today, House Republican Chairwoman Elise Stefanik announced her vote in favor of a rescissions package aimed at reducing government spending by $9 billion. The package includes measures to defund National Public Radio (NPR), fulfilling a promise she made to her constituents in New York’s 21st district.
In a statement, Stefanik expressed her commitment to saving taxpayer money and criticized NPR for what she described as false reporting. “Today I voted to save the American taxpayer $9 billion of unobligated bloated spending via a rescissions package including defunding NPR, a promise I vowed to deliver to #NY21. Promises made, promises kept,” she stated.
Stefanik cited past grievances with NPR and its affiliates, accusing them of publishing misleading stories. She referenced an incident from 2022 where North Country Public Radio (NCPR) allegedly reported inaccurately about her involvement in an attack on Rep. Nancy Pelosi’s husband. Additionally, she mentioned a 2021 incident involving Martha Foley, former News and Public Affairs Director at NCPR, who reportedly used her work email for political campaigning.
Further criticism was directed at NPR for its coverage related to Hunter Biden’s memoir, which Stefanik claimed included false information later corrected.
The bill now awaits approval from President Trump as part of efforts to reduce government expenditure and address wasteful practices.
