The House Veterans’ Affairs Disability Assistance and Memorial Affairs Subcommittee convened a legislative hearing today to discuss the Ernest Peltz Accrued Veterans Benefits Act, a bipartisan bill spearheaded by House Republican Leadership Chairwoman Elise Stefanik. The proposed legislation aims to refine the process of distributing pension benefits payments managed by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
Chairwoman Stefanik highlighted her collaboration with various stakeholders in crafting this bill, stating, “For years, I worked with the Peltz family, our great veterans’ service organizations, the VA, and Members of this Committee on crafting this legislation to ensure no other family has to endure what the Peltz family went through when WWII veteran and hero Ernest Peltz passed away.”
The bill was inspired by an incident involving Charles Peltz’s father, World War II veteran Ernest Peltz. Despite being approved for his accrued pension benefit before his death, due to a processing error at the VA, funds were not deposited into Mr. Peltz’s account until after he passed away. Consequently, these funds were withdrawn from his account posthumously, leaving his family responsible for all related expenses.
The legislation seeks to improve how pension benefits are issued by ensuring that veterans receive their accrued pension benefit even if they pass away during the month of claim approval or if payment is issued in the month of their death.
Chairwoman Stefanik reintroduced this bipartisan measure in April 2025.
