Essex County, NY Public Health - The Flu Does Not Discriminate!

The flu does not discriminate. It can impact our community at large. Flu season usually runs from October through May, and typically peaks between December and February. This year cases started being reported in higher than usual numbers in September, and cases of laboratory-confirmed flu are increasing week over week. No one has time for the flu…here is what it costs Americans each year due to the flu. 

$17 million – the number of workdays missed per year because of the flu

$7 billion—the estimated cost of sick days and lost productivity

$10 billion—spent on hospitalization and medical visits related to the flu

3-5 days—the average number of school days children who contract the flu will miss
